Mesothelioma Cancer

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Introduction

Mesothelioma
is a cancer that develops within the mesothelium of the body.  Mesothelioma is most often diagnosed in the pleura.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma cancer can develop in the tissues covering the lungs or the abdomen.  Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer, and one of the reasons that it has such a low survival rate is because it is not typically diagnosed until the disease is fairly advanced.  Mesothelioma is usually of three types, pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma.  Mesothelioma is a certain type of cancer most commonly caused by an exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used for centuries in various products.  Asbestos can become airborne, and once it reaches that state, can be inhaled intothe human body.  Asbestos exposure occurs when the asbestos that is in the products becomes damaged.

Cancer

Caused by asbestos, mesothelioma is a cancer that has become increasingly prevalent in the United States over the past 20years.  While mesothelioma is most common in the lungs, it is important to differentiate between mesothelioma and lung cancer.  In addition to mesothelioma and asbestosis, there is research that indicates that those who suffer from asbestos exposure and smoke are at a greatly increased risk of developing lung cancer.

Conclusion

Mesothelioma is a difficult cancer to treat.  Mesothelioma is unsmiling canker and asbestos is main grounds.
