Can education develop character?
Can high school seniors find larger purpose and deeper meaning in their lives?
These are the questions, the challenges, to
students at West Albany High School in Oregon.
The Class
Society and Nature is a second semester elective course for seniors at West Albany High School in Albany, Oregon. It incorporates both academic work, wilderness trips, and senior rite of passage work.
This is an exciting time of transitions as seniors begin to glimpse the possibility of a larger purpose and a deeper meaning in their lives. Given the opportunity to explore this transition with adult guidance and peer support, seniors gain access to strength of character that will help them meet the challenges ahead. The senior passage work is designed to help students make the best of this transition.
The class meets the district’s character education goals for personal responsibility, courage, honesty, integrity, self discipline, social responsibility, justice, kindness, and respect. Additionally, this course includes topics discussing multicultural and multigenerational issues. The course is aligned to current state CAM content standards and PASS criteria.
